The new Secretary-General of UN is António Guterres

The United Nations has named Antonio Guterres as the new designate Secretary General of the organisation.The Portuguese born politician previously served as the head of the UN refugee agency. He was also the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002

It has been revealed that his sound knowledge of international affairs and his ability to speak several languages worked in his favour. He addressed the UN in French, Spanish and English which are 3 of the 6 official languages of the UN. He can also speak his native language of Portuguese.

“The dramatic problems of today’s complex world can only inspire a humble approach – one in which the secretary-general alone neither has all the answers, nor seeks to impose his views.” 
He takes over from Ban Ki-moon who served 2 terms for 10 years. Ban Ki-moon's tenure will end in December. Antonio Guterres will begin his tenure in January 2017.
